Maya 2018 Troubleshooting live post

  1. Why can’t I see my rendered model in renderview?
  • Check that your image size in “render settings” is set to an appropriate size. Default units are always pixels. Make sure image size units are inches unless you know what pixel value to enter. Also make sure image type is set to an appropriate format such as png.
  • Make sure lights are turned on. Try to work with Maya directional light, or arnold lights

2. I have setup an occlusion layer but it does not seem to be working.

  • Make sure the model inside Maya is not scaled up too much. Try scaling it down and then render again.
  • The occlusion layer in render setup needs to be turned on – eyeball button switched on

3. I have imported my file from Rhino to Maya, but it does not seem to be showing up in the render.

  • Make sure the file in Rhino was “ungrouped” before exporting to Maya.
  • Rhino file should be placed at origin before exporting to Maya
  • It should be a mesh or polysurfaces being exported to Maya, curves will not export and will not render either

4. How do I import my Rhino model into Maya with layers?

  • In Rhino, make sure you model is at the origin, and make sure your objects are organized in layers
  • Convert the entire Rhino model to mesh by selecting all, and then typing “mesh”
  • Delete the underlying polysurfaces and make sure the only objects left behind are meshes
  • Export entire Rhino mesh model to a *.dwg AutoCAD format and save as solids during save options
  • Import the *.dwg model into Maya, it should come in with layers which can be managed easily in layer manager

5. What is the difference between shader types in Maya?

  • Reflectivity and specular properties

6. When I zoom out after importing my object in Maya, it seems to disappear from the screen.

  • Maya viewports work through cameras. So when you are viewing an object, it is actually being viewed through a camera. The reason why your object disappears when zooming out is because it is falling out of the clipping zone.
  • In the viewport, click on View > Select Camera. This should open up the channel box and attribute editor on the right side of the screen. Make sure you are in Attribute Editor which is where you modify properties. So if you are in perspective viewport for example, select the perspShape tab
  • Once in the perspShape tab, and under Camera Attributes, you will see input options for near clip plane and far clip plane. This specifies the min and max viewing distance that the camera is enabled for. Change the far clip plane to a higher value and keep increasing it till you can see your object.

7. I can’t see my model in Maya after importing from Rhino

  • Make sure the model in Rhino was at the origin before exporting
  • After importing the model in Maya, press “F” which focuses on objects in the viewport
